It’s been a very long January window for Newcastle United who are still looking to bring one player in before tonight’s deadline.
Newcastle came into the window hoping to sign at least one central midfielder which still looks to be the priority, though injuries to Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak also make things difficult for Eddie Howe.
Sky Sports journalist Pete Graves has now claimed on social media that Newcastle are still hoping to make a loan move for someone in this window but that it’s going to be very difficult.
Newcastle’s transfer nightmare is almost over
For Howe, he will be happy to see the back of this transfer window after almost losing some of his key players and struggling to sign anyone due to a significant lack of funds.
Most Premier League clubs have found it difficult to sign or offload players because of the Profit and Sustainability Rules limiting what team’s can spend, so everyone is in a bit of a tricky position at the minute.
The only thing Newcastle can really hope for is a short-term loan as a sort of stop gap to help see them through to the end of a season which has been filled with injuries so far.
According to Graves, Newcastle were still hopeful of a move as of yesterday and that central midfield remains their priority position to try and sign.
On social media, Graves said: “It’s going to be tough for #nufc BUT as of yesterday afternoon they were still hoping something might pop up. Only loans are being considered. Potentially with option/obligation. Central midfield priority.”

Newcastle will struggle to find available targets in time
While a loan move may still be possible, it’s unlikely that they will be able to find someone who not only suits Howe’s style and demands for his player with such little time left in the window.
It’s difficult to see any Premier League rivals helping the Magpies out unless absolutely desperate, so it looks like a loan from a European club would be the most likely option.
PSG’s Hugo Ekitike has been touted as a possible option after the French giants made it clear they would be looking to send him out though it’s not clear if he would be open to the move.
