‘Get away’… Ally McCoist tells 28-year-old to leave his club after he’s linked with Newcastle

Ally McCoist is desperate for Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City, but a move to Newcastle United feels further away than ever.

The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park during the January transfer window, but a deal suddenly appears to be off the table.

It had been claimed that Newcastle were confident about signing Phillips and that he was keen on joining Eddie Howe’s side, but the latest update suggests that won’t be happening.

It has been reported that Newcastle have cooled their interest in the midfielder, with Man City seemingly unwilling to lower their demands. They want a loan fee of around £7million, as well as an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

That does not suit Newcastle, who have grown frustrated and lost all confidence of completing a deal.

With the deal now off, Newcastle are not going to get the midfielder they have been craving, while Phillips might not get the move he needs. It has been claimed that a switch to Crystal Palace could happen, but we are halfway through the transfer window and Phillips is yet to find a new club – despite Pep Guardiola making it very clear that he has no future at the Etihad Stadium.

That is why Ally McCoist is adamant that Phillips simply has to change clubs this month.

Ally McCoist begs Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City

McCoist has spoke about Phillips’ future on TalkSPORT on Tuesday morning, and is desperate for him to leave Man City and play regularly somewhere.

“I just think the boy has got to get away and play,” he said.

“I mean, we’ve spoken about it before in terms of the Euros coming up. I know Gareth’s [Southgate] very, very loyal and he sticks with Harry Maguire for example.

“It doesn’t mean you necessarily won’t be in the squad if you’re not playing. The goalkeeper issue is a different one.

“Pep Guardiola has made it abundantly obvious, as obvious as I’ve ever seen any coach or manager say, wee man, you’re not in my plans.”

Phillips simply needs to go, whether it is to Newcastle or anywhere else

Whether it is Newcastle or someone else, Phillips needs to go and play football. He wants to be in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024, but that might not happen if he spends the next few months on the Man City bench.

He would be a welcome addition at St James’ Park, but a deal suddenly looks very unlikely. It does not make financial sense, and a short-term deal could have long-term implications.

The most surprising thing is that Phillips is still at Man City. It is so clear that he needs to leave, yet the Telegraph have claimed that he has not pushed for a departure. That has allowed Man City to stick by their demands, which is the reason Newcastle have taken a step back.

Whether it is Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Real Madrid or Blyth Spartans, McCoist is right – Phillips just needs to get away and play.
