Newcastle United are hotly tipped to sign one of the best midfielders in Europe with talks underway to bring Nicolo Barella from Inter Milan.

If Newcastle are looking to make a statement signing this summer, they don’t come much bigger than Inter Milan‘s Nicolo Barella.

Barella was the driving force in Inter’s midfield that saw the Italian giants surprise everyone in the Champions League final by making life extremely difficult for Manchester City. He was also key to Italy’s success at Euro 2020 when they beat England in the final.

The 26-year-old made 52 appearances in all competitions for Inter last season, contributing with nine goals and 10 assists along the way.

He’s so good that former Newcastle player Don Hutchison said he’d pay his wages to make the deal happen when he was asked what he thought about the transfer on ESPN: “Can I pay his wages? Can I pick him up from the airport? What do I do?

“That would be a statement signing. Imagine a Newcastle midfield next season with James Maddison, Barella and the quality that they’ve already got there. Bruno [Guimaraes]’s in there as well, Joelinton. So you’re adding a brilliant player that would go into Newcastle’s eleven.

“That’s the tricky point I think for Eddie Howe because everybody’s waiting for Newcastle to make the move and everyone’s thinking, including myself, how do you make this move, what do you do? Do you buy good players and you take it slowly, or do you really go out and make a statement signing?

“If they got Barella that would be a statement signing.”

Newcastle would be getting one of the best players in Europe at their best

Barella signing for Newcastle will be the most celebrated statement since it was announced that Steve Bruce had been sacked.

If the Magpies managed to get this deal done at £50million it would genuinely feel like we’d stolen him. Jamie Carragher recently claimed he is one of the ‘best in Europe‘. Such praise is usually reserved for players with a price tag of closer to £100million than £50million.

We’d be getting a ‘world-class‘ player at the absolute peak of his powers with bags of experience at the top level. Signing Barella could definitely go a long way to making sure Newcastle reach that next rung on the ladder.
