Newcastle United are now set to miss out on an exciting young target who looks destined to join Barcelona in the summer.

Newcastle had previously identified Lucas Bergvall as their next young target with bags of potential to develop into a top talent in the Premier League.

However, journalist Fabrizio Romano is now claiming that the teenager is on the verge of signing for Barcelona with their bid of around £8.5m expected to be accepted this week.

Bergvall prefers move to Barcelona over Newcastle

For so many young players around the world it is the dream to join a team like Real Madrid or Barcelona and it’s so difficult to compete with that kind of pull, even if financially they aren’t in the greatest position.

As reported by Romano, Bergvall was very clear from the beginning that he wanted to join the Spanish giants and his club Djurgardens would effectively be forced into making the deal.

Newcastle will no doubt be disappointed to have lost out to Barcelona, but it was always going to be a tough ask to compete with the five-time Champions League winners.

This is something Newcastle will have gotten used to after two years under the Saudi-backed ownership as they have the money to bring in top talents but are yet to achieve elite status which gives them the pulling power they need.

Newcastle forced to look elsewhere for young talent

It’s an exciting time to be a Newcastle supporter and for more than one reason. Not only are the first team performing well, but the whole infrastructure of the club is being developed behind the scenes.

One of the most important parts of being a successful football club is improving the youth recruitment and bringing in exciting prospects into the academy who can grow into the first-team squad.

We’ve already seen the likes of Yankuba Minteh signing who doesn’t look too far off having a serious role to play in this Newcastle team next season.

But there are other names people may not be so familiar with with bags of potential and who are performing exceptionally well for the club’s youth sides.

Travis Hernes, for example, was brought in this summer and earned a spot on the bench in the victory against Fulham, so he may just be one to watch for the future.
