Fabrizio Romano has given a transfer update on one key Newcastle United target who is going to be in high demand this summer.

Newcastle first registered their interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko over a year ago now, and they have remained keen on signing him in the last couple of months.

Journalist Romano has now claimed on The Here We Go Podcast that Sesko will be an ‘interesting name’ to watch in the summer with several European clubs rivalling Newcastle for his signature.

Romano says there will be stiff competition for Newcastle target

Nothing is ever simple when it comes to Newcastle and it looks like this deal is also going to be far from straightforward with so many European clubs keen on the 6ft 4 striker.

Both Manchester United and Arsenal were believed to be tracking the forward while Chelsea are also understood to be interested, providing Newcastle with a big problem.

Reports claim that Sesko will be available for around £55m due to a release clause in his contract and Leipzig look to be happy to sell given the fact he has only started 38% of their league games this season.

Despite playing a bit more of a backup role, however, the Slovenian has still netted six times in 18 league appearances as well as two in seven in the Champions League, so the quality is still there.

On Sesko, Romano said: “I think so, I think he’s going to be an interesting name for the summer, we’ll see what Leipzig decides to do but I think he is going to be an interesting name because of all of the movement for a striker again next summer.

“And with Benjamin Sesko it’s also important to say that the interest is from different countries.

“For example there are clubs in England tracking Sesko for time, there are clubs in Italy that also want Sesko so I think there could be interesting movement for this player.

“Lets see how the second half of the season is going to be for him.”

Newcastle hoping to add strength in depth to their attack

Sesko has been tipped to be one for the future for a couple years now and while he is still just 20-years-old, the striker needs to take that next step to a top European club to realise his true potential.

Newcastle, should they be able to offer either Champions League or Europa League football, would be a good fit for the forward as they hope to replace Callum Wilson with a younger and healthier model.

Of course, Alexander Isak is still first choice for Eddie Howe having spent £63m to get him, but with his recent injury record and the amount of games there is to play the pair could certainly share their playing time.
