Leicester City midfielder James Maddison would find a prospective move to Newcastle United ‘very attractive’ if they qualify for the Champions League this season.

That’s according to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who spoke about the 26-year-old during an interview with Dutch outlet Soccer News.

“I think he will transfer in the coming summer because it is very difficult to make deals in the January window,” he said.

“It could be Newcastle, but that just depends: will they secure a Champions League ticket?

“If they do, it would be a very attractive destination.”

Eddie Howe tried to land the England international at St James’ Park back in the summer, but the Foxes rejected their bids worth up to £50m.

Whilst a top four finish would obviously be an enticing factor for any prospective player, the more exciting proposition is the long-term project being built on Tyneside.

At the moment, there is no rush for silverware. Instead, Howe and his coaching staff are laying the foundations for years to come.

With this in mind, Champions League qualification will become a more realistic and a more regular possibility further down the line.

Having just turned 26-years-old, Maddison would be a great player to add to the Toon squad for the next five years.

Hailed by England boss Gareth Southgate as an ‘exceptional’ player, the Leicester playmaker is definitely good enough to play at the top level in the Champions League.

Therefore, whilst this indicator will become clear at the end of the season, the Magpies should still try to convince him to make the move to Tyneside in January.
