Report: Newcastle growing in confidence that they will sign James Maddison

Newcastle United are reportedly becoming more confident that they will sign James Maddison next year.

That is according to Give Me Sport, who claim that the midfielder will leave Leicester City in 2023, with the Magpies believing they can bring him to St James’ Park.

It was recently reported that Maddison is Newcastle’s top target heading into the January transfer window. However, a deal will depend on finances.

There is seemingly no desire from the Toon owners to break the bank in January, having already made big signings this season in the shape of Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.

It has been claimed that Newcastle will not be making any major additions next month – unless the right deal becomes available.

So if Maddison is keen to come and Leicester are willing to sell at a reasonable price, then perhaps a deal could be done in January.

But if not, summer 2023 could be the time for Maddison to become a Magpie.

Maddison camp keen to stay in contact with Newcastle

A January move will depend on how much Leicester want, but Newcastle appear to be relaxed about the situation. Given how well we have been playing, there is no need to splash out on a major new signing.

It would certainly boost out European aspirations, but with the owners targeting steady progress there is less desire to splash out once again in January.

Newcastle had two bids rejected for Maddison in the summer, which suggested there was confidence they could bring him to Tyneside. Now the Chronicle report that the 26-year-old’s camp are keen to stay in contact with Newcastle.

That would suggest that they want a deal to happen – or they want to boost Maddison’s position at Leicester ahead of possible contract negotiations. His current deal expires in 2024, meaning 2023 is an important year for his future at the King Power Stadium.

Whether a deal happens in January or the summer, Give Me Sport believe Newcastle are becoming more confident of signing him.
