After a hugely disappointing summer, Newcastle United are under pressure heading into the January transfer window.
Paul Mitchell failed to make any major signings during his first summer as Newcastle United sporting director, while the aftermath has not been pretty.
There has been tension behind the scenes at St James’ Park, particularly after Mitchell’s rather explosive interview.
But the hope now is that things are improving, with Mitchell and Eddie Howe holding fresh talks as the club prepares for the January transfer window. That will be the next major test for their relationship, and it will be interesting to see what approach Mitchell takes.
Newcastle United linked with fresh bid for Marc Guehi
Newcastle failed to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window, despite committing a huge amount of time to the deal.

It was largely embarrassing for the Magpies, and it has been rumoured that there will be a fresh approach for the England international.
It was recently reported Newcastle might be able to get Guehi on a cut price deal worth around £50million, after the Eagles wanted £75million for him in the summer.
How Newcastle feel internally about Marc Guehi situation
However, talk of a bargain deal in January has been met with confusion by those inside St James’ Park.
That is according to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who has written in a Q&A: “Reports suggesting Newcastle expect to get Guehi for a knockdown price in January have caused puzzlement among some inside the club.”
Waugh notes that there are currently no definitive plans for the January transfer window, before suggesting that right wing could become Newcastle’s priority rather than a centre-back.
Newcastle need a winger more than a centre-back in January
By January, Newcastle’s squad could look a lot healthier. The hope is that Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles will be back from injury, which would lessen the need for Newcastle to sign another centre-back.
In contrast, it is very clear that Newcastle United need another winger, and that is not because of injury.
Eddie Howe needs an upgrade on Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy, and that should be Paul Mitchell’s priority at the start of 2025. However, it remains to be seen who Newcastle could target.
As for Guehi, it would not be a surprise if Newcastle made a fresh move for him, even if the club are puzzled by talk of being able to sign him for a reduced fee. However, that might become a reality given his contract situation at Selhurst Park, with Guehi’s current deal at Crystal Palace expiring in 2026.
