It all ended rather amicably in the end. Gordon was full of praise for his time at Newcastle, while Eddie Howe also wished him well.

There has been an outpouring of love for Gordon on social media as a result, and Anderson joined in.

Anderson and Gordon were great friends during their time together at Newcastle, with the former leaving St James’ Park back in 2024.

Reacting to Gordon’s opening message to Barca fans on social media platform Instagram, Anderson wrote: “All the best bro. Smash it.”

While it’s difficult to imagine the club actively wanting to sell Gordon, his departure is very different from Anderson’s.

In fact, Gordon’s exit is perhaps the first significant one in the PIF era that isn’t against Newcastle’s will.

They have sold a player on their own terms for once. The club did not want to part ways with any of Anderson, Yankuba Minteh or Alexander Isak but – for different reasons – they were ultimately forced to.

Hopefully, this marks the start of a new era. Frankly, it is time that Newcastle embraced the fact they are a selling club.

It does not have to be all bad. Theoretically – although fans may doubt the ability of those in charge to do this – the club now have time and space to reinvest those funds properly.

They didn’t really get that luxury with Anderson, nor with Isak.

Gordon leaves a strange legacy on Tyneside. Excellent at times but largely anonymous at others, it’s difficult to place exactly where he sits in Newcastle’s record books.

Wherever one stands on Gordon, it’s just good to see at least some lessons are being learned.
