Newcastle United have released a statement confirming Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona.
Earlier this week, Barcelona agreed a £69.3million deal with Newcastle for Gordon, who had been widely expected to join Bayern Munich this summer.

However, the Catalan giants hijacked the deal and have now signed the England international.
It is a huge move for Gordon. While the 25-year-old has not always convinced on Tyneside, joining one of the biggest clubs in the world is undoubtedly a major step in his career.
Newcastle United thank Gordon after selling him to Barcelona
A statement posted on Newcastle United’s official website read: “Newcastle United can confirm that Anthony Gordon has signed for La Liga champions Barcelona for a significant undisclosed fee.
“Anthony joined the Magpies in January 2023 from Everton and went on to make 152 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 39 goals.
“Anthony helped the team achieve UEFA Champions League qualification during his debut season but made his real breakthrough the following campaign, establishing himself as a key figure as he scored 11 times from 35 Premier League appearances.

“That form saw him gain senior international recognition, earning an England call-up for the March friendlies and making his debut at Wembley against Brazil that month. He then went on to represent his country at Euro 2024 after previously starring for the under-21s when he was named Player of the Tournament in the 2023 European Under-21 Championships.
“Anthony also played a pivotal role in the team’s run to the 2025 Carabao Cup final, which saw the club end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. He featured in every game on the road to Wembley and scored vital goals in both legs of the semi-final victory over Arsenal.
“In his final campaign as a Newcastle United player, Gordon finished as the team’s top scorer across all competitions with 17 goals, including ten in Europe.
“Everyone at Newcastle United would like to thank Anthony for his efforts while with the club and wish him all the success for his future.”
Gordon has undoubtedly been a successful signing for Newcastle.
While he was suspended for the 2025 Carabao Cup final, the former Everton forward was excellent against Arsenal in the semi-finals of that campaign and played a crucial role in Eddie Howe’s side getting to Wembley in the first place.
In truth, Gordon’s career at Newcastle fizzled out. He leaves having scored 39 goals while registering 28 assists in 152 games but his level of consistency in the Premier League has dropped since his first full season at the club in 2023/24.

Still, such is the quality of the player, it is not hard to imagine Gordon doing well in La Liga.
It’s a good move for all parties. Gordon gets the huge move he has seemingly been angling for, while Newcastle bank a significant profit at the start of the summer transfer window.
Newcastle promised to learn lessons from last summer’s debacle with Alexander Isak and it appears they have made a start on that.
Now, it’s about replacing Gordon adequately.
