Eddie Howe has delivered his instant reaction to Newcastle United completing the signing of Aaron Ramsdale on loan.
After Newcastle United missed out on James Trafford, they quickly turned their attention to Aaron Ramsdale.
The 27-year-old is officially a Newcastle United player, arriving on loan from Southampton with an option to buy next summer.
Newcastle are paying £4million to loan Ramsdale, who becomes the second senior signing of the summer after Anthony Elanga.
It has been a challenging summer, with Newcastle missing out on multiple key targets. But Eddie Howe is delighted to secure the services of Ramsdale. He has wanted to bring in a goalkeeper that can challenge Nick Pope for a place in the starting XI, and Ramsdale will do exactly that.

Eddie Howe’s first words on Newcastle United signing Aaron Ramsdale
Following confirmation of Ramsdale’s arrival on loan from Southampton, the Newcastle United manager has spoken to newcastleunited.com about what the goalkeeper’s arrival at St James’ Park means for the club.
“Aaron is an exceptional goalkeeper who adds further quality and international experience to our squad.
“Having worked with him before, I know what he can bring to us on and off the pitch, so we look forward to welcoming him into the group.”
Eddie Howe wanted Aaron Ramsdale at Newcastle United in 2024
While the Ramsdale to Newcastle deal has happened quickly, he is a player who Howe knows very well.
They worked together at Bournemouth, with Ramsdale acting as Howe’s number one during his final season at the Vitality Stadium.
The duo are now reunited on Tyneside, 12 months after Howe first tried to bring Ramsdale to Newcastle United.
Ramsdale was a Newcastle target in 2024, at a time when the Magpies were also chasing Giorgi Mamardashvili.
In the end, neither player arrived as Newcastle changed their transfer plans after failing to qualify for Europe. The plan was for someone like Ramsdale to rotate with Pope, but that was no longer required with European football not on the cards.
But it is on the cards for the 2025/26 season, with the Magpies back in the Champions League. With domestic and European duties set to be juggled, Howe will be relying heavily on both Ramsdale and Pope.
