There has been a fair amount of upheaval at Newcastle United this summer.
Though the transfer window has not been as busy as hoped, the landscape at Newcastle has changed.
Indeed, former directors Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi have left St James’ Park in news that is said to have bewildered sections of the first-team squad.
Paul Mitchell is through the door as sporting director, while James Bunce has been appointed technical director.
It’s all made for a huge amount of change for manager Eddie Howe, who is said to have been hit hard by the departures of Staveley and Ghodoussi.
While it’s still very early into his tenure, Mitchell is yet to make an impact in the transfer market.
With that in mind, comments from talkSPORT’s Alex Crook are particularly interesting.

Eddie Howe had an interesting transfer agreement with Amanda Staveley at Newcastle
Not long after Mitchell’s arrival, Howe admitted there was still some work being done in regards to who exactly oversees transfers.
Speaking on the radio station at 5.22pm BST on 25/08/2024, Crook said: “Eddie Howe enjoyed a really close relationship with Amanda Staveley and her husband, who have sold their shares. In fact, I was told there was an agreement between Amanda and Eddie that he would get the final say on any transfers.
Paul Mitchell has a lot of work to do at Newcastle
Though it’s hard to imagine the ownership making any judgements about Mitchell this early into his time at the club, the optics for supporters haven’t been great.
Howe’s side looked lethargic and out of ideas against Bournemouth on Sunday, just as they did for much of their Premier League opener despite beating Southampton.
While those behind the scenes are said to be calm about having failed to sign many players who can realistically make an instant impact in the first-team, it’s difficult to get away from the idea that things are looking a little stale right now.
The changing landscape in the hierarchy cannot have helped matters this summer. Hopefully, it doesn’t deny Newcastle any meaningful business during what remains of the window.
