Dominik Szoboszlai has refused to commit his future to RB Leipzig following links with a move to Newcastle United.
The Hungarian midfielder is on the Magpies’ radar heading into the summer transfer window, and talk of Szoboszlai to Newcastle ramped up last week.
A report claimed that the 22-year-old was now Eddie Howe’s top transfer target ahead of next season. The story from Hungarian outlet Nemzeti Sport stated that the Toon owners would offer him a huge financial package, with a contract worth £190,000-a-week.
While talk of a contract offer feels like a stretch at the moment, there is no denying that Szoboszlai would be an excellent addition at St James’ Park.
He is a top class playmaker, and the type of player who would be considered an ‘elite’ signing. That is what Newcastle are looking to make if they qualify for the Champions League.
That is the competition that Howe’s team will hopefully be in next season, and it is also where Szoboszlai wants to be.
Szoboszlai refuses to commit his future to RB Leipzig
Leipzig were in Bundesliga action on Sunday, coming from behind to beat Werder Bremen 2-1. Szoboszlai was the hero, scoring the winner in the 97th minute.
He spoke to German outlet Tag24 after the game and addressed his future at the club.
“I’m definitely still with RB Leipzig for three games,” he said.
“I would like to play in the Champions League and would like to win my second trophy with RB Leipzig. We will see what happens after the summer.”
The Hungary international also corrected a reporter, who had said that Szoboszlai was staying with Leipzig.
“I didn’t say that,” he said.
Champions League football can give Newcastle an edge
Szoboszlai is pretty emphatic in his desire to play in the Champions League again next season. That is the level that he is at, whether it is for Leipzig or another club.
The German side are on course to qualify for Europe’s elite competition. They are third in the Bundesliga with two games to go. Freiberg are the team that are looking to creep into the top four, and are currently four points behind Leipzig in fifth.
It is an almost identical situation to the Premier League, where Newcastle are also third. However, the gap could be down to a point if Liverpool beat Leicester in Monday night’s contest. Howe’s side are still in the driving seat, but fans are suddenly looking very nervously over their shoulders.
A top four finish would be incredible for the club, and it will also open us up to an entire new world of transfers. The likes of Szoboszlai would be very attainable, as he has made it clear that he wants to play in the Champions League next season.
He has not committed his future to RB Leipzig, which is certainly a boost to Newcastle’s hopes of bringing him to Tyneside.
