Reported Newcastle United transfer target Diego Carlos produced a solid display for Sevilla yesterday.

The Brazilian played the full game against Getafe, with Sevilla running out 1-0 winners to keep the pressure on league leaders Real Madrid.

Rafa Mir scored what would turn out to be the winner in the first-half. And Julen Lopetegui’s side were able to keep things tight to secure all three points.

Magpies fans hoping Newcastle will go in for the Brazilian may be intrigued to know that the star was really solid throughout.

He was good on the ball, completing 81/92 passes (88%). And he was pretty dominant defensive, winning 5/7 of his duels (via Sofascore).

He made more clearances than any other Sevilla player (3). He also made the most blocks, and wasn’t dribbled past once.

Spanish publication El Desmarque gave him an 8/10 for his performance, and said that he ‘did everything right’.

It remains to be seen if Carlos becomes a Newcastle player in the coming days.

Tonight, there have been reports (The Athletic) that a deal for Sven Botman is now off, with Lille not wanting to sell the Dutchman.

That will surely increase the urgency of the recruitment officials, who have only a few weeks now to get deals done.

Interestingly, The Athletic’s report states Carlos is still of interest to Newcastle.

Diego Carlos would be a cracking addition for Newcastle

Sevilla have the best defence in La Liga at the minute having conceded just 13 goals in 20 games. And Carlos has been virtually ever-present so far this season.

He has been huge for them, and Sevilla will surely be extremely reluctant to lose him. Especially since they are trying to keep pace with Real Madrid at the top.

If Newcastle can sign Carlos then it would be a real coup. He’s fast, strong, experienced and has tasted silverware having won the Europa League. He’s also won an Olympic gold medal.

He’d likely be extremely expensive, but Newcastle aren’t in any position to be wasting time negotiating.
