Newcastle United are reportedly considering a transfer swoop for Brazilian defender Diego Carlos.
According to The Telegraph, the Magpies have a list of potential alternatives to Sven Botman, and the Sevilla man is on it.
Newcastle want the Dutchman to come in and bolster their backline but Lille are reluctant to sell.
It could be that they stand firm, and Newcastle have no time to waste.
Apparently Carlos is someone the club could look at instead.
The Telegraph say the 28-year-old has been an outstanding performer for the Spanish outfit over the last couple of years.
He is said to be valued north of £30 million. Selling for such an amount would net Sevilla a tidy profit.
Carlos won the Europa League in 2020, and last summer, he became an Olympic gold medal winner with Brazil in Tokyo.
To date, he has clocked up 116 appearances for Sevilla since joining in the summer of 2019 from Nantes. He has a contract with the club until 2024, meaning Sevilla are in a pretty healthy position to demand a premium fee.
Carlos actually has a release clause of £65 million, which Sevilla may or may not refer potential suitors to.
Diego Carlos could make good addition for Newcastle
Diego Carlos is certainly highly regarded in Spain. He has definitely played a big part in Sevilla’s achievements over the past few years.
He is a no-nonsense defender, which can sometimes land him trouble with referees. This season he has picked up four yellow cards and a red. And last term he picked up 10 and one red.
Newcastle need to sign players who are going to be reliable.
Carlos is quick and strong, but may be a slight risk.
Hopefully, Newcastle can seal a deal for Botman before long.
