Newcastle United have been in the conversation to sign Abdukodir Khusanov from RC Lens this month.
The Magpies are looking for centre-back reinforcements, after failing to sign Marc Guehi in the summer.
Paul Mitchell has changed Newcastle’s transfer strategy, with the Toon sporting director keen to target more players from untapped markets.
With that in mind, it is no surprise that the Magpies are being linked with a 20-year-old defender from Uzbekistan.
It has been claimed that Khusanov is open to joining Newcastle, as he prepares to change clubs during the January transfer window.
Newcastle have held talks about signing Khusanov, and there had been hope that a deal was progressing.

Newcastle United unlikely to sign Abdukodir Khusanov
However, the latest update from the Athletic’s David Ornstein suggests that the RC Lens centre-back will not be heading to Tyneside this month.
According to David Ornstein, Newcastle United are unlikely to sign Khusanov in January due to their current financial situation.
Ornstein states that while the Magpies are big fans of the youngster and he fits the profile of the type of signing they want, a Toon transfer is not on the cards.
He also adds that Tottenham are not expected to pursue a deal any further, with Lens looking to receive a fee in excess of £33million. That is more than what was previously claimed. It had been suggested that the Uzbekistan international could cost between £20million and £25million.
Newcastle United to miss their chance to sign Khusanov
With his price tag rising and Newcastle’s financial issues not going away, it looks like Eddie Howe is going to miss out.
However, he might not just miss out on Khusanov in January.
While Newcastle might not be able to sign him this month, the hope is that someone will.
David Ornstein has stated that super-agent Jorge Mendes has been tasked with sorting out Khusanov’s future this month, as he sets about getting Lens the best possible deal.
With Mendes pulling the strings, Khusanov will probably get the big move he is being touted for.
But it will not be to Newcastle, which is a real shame. Khusanov looked perfect for Mitchell, as he aims to kickstart his tenure as the Magpies’ sporting director.
