Newcastle United appear to have lost the race to sign Kris Ajer, with Brentford poised to land the Norway international.
There were plenty of reports last week that the newly-promoted Premier League side had agreed a £13.5 million deal with Celtic for his transfer.

It is anticipated that Brentford will make an official announcement soon.
Should it go through as expected, Ajer will become the club’s new record signing.
Newcastle have long been linked with Ajer, but it looks like the Magpies have been pipped to the post.
Former Newcastle winger Darren Ambrose yesterday gave his take on the situation on talkSPORT.

He said (5.44pm): “Newcastle are on standstill at the moment, let’s be honest.
“No one knows what’s going on with the takeover. There’s a lot of talk that it’s happening then it isn’t happening.
“They need to get that over the line, and then they can look to progress into the future.
“£13.5 million for a newly-promoted side, they’re (Brentford) showing some intent.”
Newcastle’s loss is Brentford’s gain
Ambrose is right to praise Brentford over Ajer.
Assuming the deal goes through, then it is a positive move from them and a definite show of ambition.

Ajer is a player with a big reputation in Scotland.
He didn’t have his greatest season in 2020/21, but his potential is big.
Newcastle appear to have let him slip through their grasp, and he could end up being an uncomfortable watch for Toon fans.
