Journalist Florian Plettenberg is now claiming there’s been a huge change in the transfer saga of one Newcastle United player who has been the talk of the January window so far.

Bayern Munich made it clear that they wanted to bring Kieran Trippier in this month as their new starting right-back, though Newcastle rejected all three of their bids they have made so far.

Now, Florian Plettenberg is claiming that Bayern are close to withdrawing from the deal after their latest offer of around £13m was rejected by the Magpies.

Newcastle now set to hold on to Trippier this month

The future of the England international has been up in the air over the last week with some reports claiming his head had been turned while other suggested he is very happy at the club and wants to stay.

This latest update suggests that regardless of how Trippier feels about the move, Bayern are looking to pull out of any potential deal anyway after growing frustrated with Newcastle’s valuation of the defender.

Plettenberg understands that there are currently no plans to submit a fresh bid in the final week or so of the transfer window and that Newcastle are set to hold onto their key man who has been so influential on this current team.

We’ll see in the coming days how serious Bayern are about signing Trippier or if they would rather look for better value elsewhere after deals for two separate right-backs broke down.

Trippier could still leave in the summer

Like Callum Wilson, Trippier only has 18 months left on his current contract and therefore this could be the last opportunity the club have to make any money by selling the 33-year-old.

From a business perspective it makes the most sense to cash in while they still can, especially as the right-back position is one of the few that Newcastle are currently well stocked in with Tino Livramento ready to step up.

But that doesn’t change the fact that Trippier is still a key figure in the team whether he is playing or not and it will be a big blow now or in the summer to lose such an important character and personality.

As a player Trippier still has a lot to offer on the pitch, the type of player who can get better with age, and there’s a reason one of the best teams in Europe and favourites for the Champions League were so keen to sign him.
