Newcastle United have been handed yet another transfer blow as one of their January targets now looks set to stay at his club.

Newcastle supporters were eagerly anticipating this transfer window to see how the club could save what has been a relatively disappointing season so far, but it doesn’t look like there’s much in the works.

The Magpies had previously targeted Atalanta’s Ederson as a midfield replacement for the suspended Sandro Tonali, but a new report from Tutto Atalanta now says that the club will hold on to their star man this month.

Newcastle suffer another January transfer blow

It’s been a very long month so far for Newcastle fans who feel like it’s just been bad news after bad news in terms of what the club are doing to improve the squad.

It was believed that their number one target coming into this window was Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, but it’s been rumoured that Newcastle are unwilling to pay the loan fee for the 28-year-old.

This has caused fans to seriously panic about what there actually is to spend in January if anything, and it certainly means they would struggle to sign the likes of Ederson who is valued at around £35m.

Newcastle are in serious need of midfield additions and Ederson is someone how they have watched over the last six months and been impressed with, but even if they could afford the fee, Atalanta are determined to keep a hold of the 24-year-old.

Newcastle will be patient this month

Rather than panicking about their Premier League position and the fact they were knocked out of the Champions League at the earliest stage, Newcastle are choosing to remain patient in January.

They could have looked desperately for some reinforcements with players who may not have necessarily fit what Eddie Howe wants, but instead they’re waiting to see who is available at the end of the month as well as banking on players returning from injury.

When Harvey Barnes comes back into the fold it will almost be like a new signing given that he’s been missing since the 8-0 win over Sheffield United.

It was initially believed that he, along with Joe Willock and Jacob Murphy, would be back at the end of January, though it seems Newcastle will again have to be patient as that return date has again been pushed back.
