Cheslea midfielder Mason Mount looks set to join Manchester United this summer and the Blues have set their sights on Newcastle United target Gabri Veiga to replace him.
The Magpies have a long-standing interest in 21-year-old Gabri Veiga from Celta Vigo as Newcastle look to add quality to the squad ahead of a tough season.
The Spain Under 21 international has many admirers across Europe but as yet nobody has made the move to activate his £34.6million release clause, however the Evening Standard feel that could soon change as Chelsea start to shop for a Mason Mount replacement.
Gabri Veiga has caught the eye of several Premier League sides
Veiga, who can play as a number 6 or number 8, scored 11 goals and provided four assists in 40 appearances for Celta Vigo last season putting him firmly in the sights of several top clubs including Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.
Spanish outlet Sport.es said that Veiga has ‘amazing ability’ and there’s a general consensus that he’s destined for big things.
It will be interesting to see if Chelsea do move to activate his release clause, how many other clubs will join them and plead their case to the youngster.
Newcastle won’t want to miss out on Veiga after tracking him for months
Hopefully Newcastle will be one of them in the fight having been linked with Veiga since March.
While he may only be 21 but he’s definitely first-team ready as evidenced by his 36 La Liga appearances last season which included him bagging a brace against Barcelona on the final day.
It would be one thing for Newcastle to miss out on Veiga but it would be quite another to not even try and sign him after months of speculation.
