Chelsea looking to beat Newcastle to £25m transfer target

Signing players at the level Newcastle United are currently operating at is never easy.

With the club back in the Champions League next season, there is a limited pool of players who can come in and make a big impact right away.

As Newcastle get closer and closer to competing with the elite level on a regular basis, that pool gets shallower.

In those kind of waters swim other top-level clubs with the money and ambition to rival Newcastle and PIF when it comes to potential recruits.

With that in mind, it’s hardly surprising to see rivals move for players also linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Chelsea ready to make move for Matheus Franca

Indeed, not only are Chelsea reportedly ready to go up against Newcastle for the signing of Southampton defender Tino Livramento, they are after another.

According to the Daily Mail, the Blues are exploring a move for Flamengo midfielder Matheus Franca.

It is claimed Newcastle saw a bid worth around £13.5m for the teenager rejected back in January but Chelsea could now move for around £25m.

In May, reports from Brazil even suggested the Magpies had promised to make a fresh move for the 19-year-old during this summer’s transfer window.

Chelsea, however, are now ready to make a move of their own.

Newcastle have other midfielders lined up

While it’s never particularly nice to imagine a Premier League rival beating Newcastle to the signing of what looks like a wonderkid, there are other priorities.

Eddie Howe needs players who can make an immediate impact and pinning hopes on a teenager doesn’t seem like the wisest idea.

The likes of Kalvin Phillips are being touted as targets again and, on paper at least, that looks more of an addition ready to make an instant impact.
