Newcastle United target Ross Barkley started for Chelsea in their crucial Champions League game last night.
Thomas Tuchel’s side faced Zenit Saint Petersburg in their sixth and final group game, with top spot still up for grabs.
The Blues had already secured qualification to the knockout stages, and a win in Russia would have ensured they went through as group winners.
However, a late equaliser from Zenit made it 3-3, and handed Juventus top spot after beating Malmo 1-0.

Despite the severity of the game, Tuchel made plenty of changes. He brought Barkley into the midfield, who was starting just his third game of the season.
And it looks like starting Barkley was a mistake. The Chelsea fans weren’t impressed with his performance, with many calling on him to leave the club in January.
The 28-year-old didn’t play the full game, being withdrawn after 65 minutes.

Chelsea fans furious with Ross Barkley
Is Barkley what Newcastle need in January?
While there were some angry Chelsea fans demanding that Barkley leaves the club, others were more measured. Some supporters questioned his position in the starting XI, playing as the midfield pivot.
It was a role that Barkley clearly struggled in. Could that be bad news for Newcastle?
Like so many other players, he’s been linked with the Magpies ahead of the January transfer window. According to the Telegraph, Newcastle’s owners have spoke about signing Barkley.
But where would he fit in at St James’ Park? In Newcastle’s past three games, they have started with a 4-4-2 formation.

Eddie Howe has been playing Joe Willock and Jonjo Shelvey, but could boost his midfield options next month. While the latter is doing well, the former’s position could be up for grabs.
But Barkley doesn’t seem like a good fit for that role. He’s better when he gets to play further up the pitch, operating just behind the striker.
Newcastle aren’t using that kind of system right now, and given his struggles in a deeper role, perhaps Barkley isn’t the right fit for the Magpies.
