Newcastle United fans were not enthused about the prospect of signing Conor Gallagher this summer, but it sounds like they need not worry.

The 23-year-old has been on the Magpies’ radar for a long time now, and it was recently claimed that Eddie Howe is looking into a possible loan deal for the Chelsea midfielder.

If that was not possible, Newcastle would consider a permanent move for Gallagher. However, he would not be cheap. It could take as much as £40million for Chelsea to sell.

That sounded like far too much for a Newcastle side that is looking to act with caution in the the transfer market, and it now looks like Gallagher is definitely a name that should be scratched off the club’s list of transfer targets.

Conor Gallagher to stay at Chelsea

According to TalkSPORT, Gallagher is going to get a chance to prove himself to new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.

The report adds that people close to Gallagher believe that he is now likely to stay and compete for a place in Pochettino’s starting XI at Stamford Bridge.

At the moment, that is not a surprise. The Blues have moved a lot of players on so far this summer, including three midfielders. Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all left the club.

That leaves Chelsea light in the middle of the park, although they are trying to do a deal for Brighton star Moises Caicedo. However, he is going to cost a huge amount of money.

The outgoings and lack of incomings look like they will lead to an opportunity for Gallagher, which is bad news for Howe’s hopes of signing him.

Newcastle deal felt unlikely

In truth, a deal always felt like a longshot. Chelsea have proven to be difficult to negotiate with in the recent past, with the Londoners stopping Gallagher from joining Newcastle at the start of the year.

This is one that fans won’t be too upset about, as there was not a lot of buzz from the Toon Army when talk of Gallagher arriving at St James’ Park resurfaced this month.

He’s going to get a chance under Pochettino, while Howe will look elsewhere as he searches for a second midfielder after Sandro Tonali’s arrival.
