Newcastle United have been told some great news as Eddie Howe looks to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.
The 22-year-old was sensational in the Championship with the Clarets, keeping a record 29 clean sheets to help Burnley win promotion back to the Premier League.
James Trafford wants to play Premier League football next season, and he will do that if he chooses to stay at Burnley next season. However, Newcastle United are interested in his signature.
Newcastle have a longstanding interest in Trafford, who will cost around £30m this summer. The Magpies had a deal set up for him during the 2024 summer transfer window, but it fell through due to Newcastle’s ongoing PSR problems.
Scott Parker is adamant that Trafford will stay at Burnley this summer, but a new transfer report has now suggested Newcastle are in luck over a potential deal for him this summer.

Burnley eye move for Ugurcan Cakir amid James Trafford exit links
Newcastle are not the only team eyeing a move for the shot-stopper. Manchester United are interested in signing Trafford this summer, but a move to Old Trafford may not be one the Burnley ace is interested in due to their lack of European football.
With Burnley returning to the Premier League, they are now looking to bolster their squad to avoid relegation straight back to the Championship.
According to L’Equipe, Burnley are looking to sign goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir from Trabzonspor this summer. The Clarets face competition from Monaco for his signature this summer, but their interest in the Turkish shot-stopper can only spell good news for Newcastle.
Burnley may be looking at Cakir as a replacement for Trafford, who is yet to decide his future ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
The Clarets have only got Vaclav Hladky as their other senior goalkeeper on the books, so signing a new one will be critical for them if they sell Trafford.
James Trafford is Newcastle United’s top transfer target
Self-titled as “world-class”, Trafford would need assurances that he will be playing regular first-team football if he were to join Newcastle.
The futures of players like Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka are still up in the air, despite Howe’s recent praise for them. One of the two could be moved on to make way for Trafford’s arrival.
A recent report revealed that Trafford is Newcastle’s top transfer target, and the player himself is keen on the move to Tyneside.
Elsewhere, Newcastle look like they have missed out on Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who now looks set to join Barcelona for £21m.
