Newcastle United’s search for a goalkeeper could lead them to Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher.
The Magpies wanted to sign a goalkeeper in 2024, with Eddie Howe eager to recruit Nick Pope’s long-term replacement.
That did not happen, with the likes of Giorgi Mamardashvili and Aaron Ramsdale moving elsewhere as Newcastle United were forced to bring in Odysseas Vlachodimos for PSR reasons.
Newcastle were also linked with James Trafford in January, and the Burnley stopper is expected to be a Toon target when the summer transfer window arrives.
Liverpool’s stance on selling Caoimhin Kelleher amid Newcastle United interest

However, the Magpies do have alternatives.
That is according to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that Newcastle United are one of the clubs interested in signing Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool.
“It will not be a huge surprise [Newcastle’s interest], as Kelleher is arguably the best number two in the world at the minute,” he said.
“An exceptional talent. He is more than good enough to play at the top level. There are a few clubs in the market for a new number one, such as Chelsea. We think Newcastle United will be as well.
“He’s a very attractive option for someone. 26-years-old and Premier League proven. He looks every inch a number one. He really does.
“The expectation is he will be leaving Liverpool this summer. It is unclear what Liverpool will ask for, but whoever gets him is getting a very good goalkeeper.”
How much Coaimhin Kelleher could cost from Liverpool
With Kelleher looking set to be available this summer, it is no surprise that Newcastle United are being linked.
After failing to address their goalkeeper situation in the past two transfer windows, it is extremely likely that a new stopper will be targeted in the summer of 2025.
Kelleher is a great option. As Bailey says, he is a decent age, and has proven himself to be Premier League quality when called upon. However, that was not the case when Newcastle and Liverpool drew 3-3 at St James’ Park earlier this season.
The Irishman was at fault for Newcastle’s equaliser, but one error does not mean he should be written off.
He has been very good for Liverpool this season, and it will be interesting to see what kind of fee he commands in the summer. Liverpool wanted £20million for Kelleher in 2024 according to TEAMtalk, which would represent a bit of a bargain in today’s financial climate.
