Looking back at Benfica boss Jesus’ comments on Newcastle target Nunez

Newcastle have been linked with a January swoop for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

Portuguese outlet Record claim that Newcastle are one of a number of clubs keen on the hitman.

He has eight goals and two assists from 15 games across all competitions so far this season.

For Newcastle fans looking to find out more about their reported target, it is perhaps worth looking back at comments from his Benfica boss Jorge Jesus.

In October 2020, as per Goal, Jesus lavished praise on Nunez. He said: “He is a kid, he is 21 years old (now 22), there is a lot about the game that he does not know yet. He will learn with me and Benfica.

“All this decision-making ability, finishing and speed…He was Benfica’s most expensive purchase, and when there is no pandemic, he will be the most expensive sale. He will be a world-class player.

“Unfortunately for me, maybe I will lose him in a short time.”

Jesus tipped Nunez’s transfer fee to be more than the club-record €126m (£113 million) they got for Joao Felix when he moved to Atletico Madrid in July 2019.

If that is the price it will take to get him out of Benfica, Newcastle can strictly speaking afford it but it would not be a wise use of their funds in the January window at all.

More pragmatic, practical signings which strengthen the defence would be more worthwhile, with the club now bottom of the Premier League.
