Barcelona have no intentions of selling ‘impressive’ 27-year-old despite links to Newcastle

It’s now understood that Barcelona aren’t willing to let go of one of their key defenders despite being linked with a move to Newcastle United.

Newcastle have held interest in Andreas Christensen for a couple of months now after it was believed that Barcelona were looking to sell him to aid their financial issues.

However, a new report from Danish outlet Tipsbladet has claimed that these rumours are ‘pure fabrication’ and that Christensen will remain at the club.

Barcelona value Christensen too highly to sell to Newcastle

Christensen enjoyed an ‘impressive‘ start to life in Spain having joined in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer from Chelsea before going on to win the league title in 2023.

Despite a promising start, there was belief that the Spanish giants would look to move the centre-back as the club are desperate to raise funds to resolve their major financial problems.

With Barcelona also possessing quality defenders like Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde, there was a feeling that they could actually get by without Christensen,

However, this new report claims that the Danish international is a valued part of Xavi’s team having featured in 15 of their 19 La Liga games this season and won’t be leaving any time soon.

Newcastle must look elsewhere for defensive additions

Newcastle are understood to be in the market for a number of positions, though their limited budget means they can only really target loan deals and bargain transfers.

A centre-back is named as one of the positions they would like to upgrade having already lost Sven Botman for three months this season to a knee injury and they’d like to avoid a similar situation happening.

While Jamaal Lascelles did a quality job as backup, the club are looking for another right-sided defender who can take his place and either support or replace the very talented Fabian Schar.

It may not be possible to attract Christensen away from Barcelona, but he’s exactly the type of experienced profile Newcastle will be looking for in this window or the next.
