Bad news for Anthony Gordon as Chelsea determined to sign player he really wants at Newcastle United

Chelsea and Newcastle United both want to sign a centre-back this summer.

It is something that Newcastle United have tried to address during the previous two transfer windows, but failed.

Their quest to find Fabian Schar’s successor is set continue, after Newcastle missed out on Abdukodir Khusanov in January. The Magpies came close to striking a deal, while Juma Bah was also a Newcastle target.

Now attention turns towards the summer, and it remains to be seen who Newcastle’s top centre-back target will be.

That honour belonged to Marc Guehi in the summer of 2024, but Newcastle will have intense competition for his signature if they make a fresh move in 2025.

Chelsea’s stance over Marc Guehi transfer

Newcastle had a clear run at Guehi last summer, but still failed to strike a deal.

The fear was that there would be more competition in 2025, as the England international prepares to enter the final 12 months of his Crystal Palace contract.

That is set to be the case. Tottenham tried to sign Guehi in January, while there was also interest from Chelsea, who are set to remain at the table.

According to the Mirror, Chelsea are ‘determined’ to bring their top target Marc Guehi to Stamford Bridge.

They add that Enzo Maresca highly rates the 24-year-old, while Chelsea do not want to see the defender join a rival ahead of them.

What Anthony Gordon said about Newcastle signing Marc Guehi

Given the fact that Guehi has unfinished business with Chelsea and would not need to relocate to join the Blues, it is understanding why a move there would appeal.

It would be a shame to miss out, as Eddie Howe is a huge fan of Guehi and sees him as someone who would improve the Magpies’ starting XI.

Guehi would also be a hugely popular player in the dressing room, given the fact he is England teammates with the likes of Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento.

In fact, Gordon even expressed how much he would love Guehi to join him at St James’ Park last summer.

“I haven’t actually seen the Newcastle links, but it goes without saying I’d absolutely love him [Guehi] to come because he’s a top player and he’d make us a better team,” Gordon told TalkSPORT in June 2024.

But as Chelsea prepare to position themselves at the front of the queue, it feels more and more likely that Newcastle’s chance to sign Guehi has been and gone.

But the Magpies do have alternative targets. Dean Huijsen is linked with Newcastle United, as is his Bournemouth teammate Illia Zabarnyi.
