Things haven’t worked out for Sadio Mane in the Bundesliga and now Ally McCoist has suggested that Newcastle United could offer the former Liverpool star a route back to the Premier League.

Following his £35million switch from Liverpool to Bayern Munich in the summer, things haven’t gone as planned for Sadio Mane.

Once considered one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, the Senegal international hasn’t managed to replicate that form in Germany and has fallen out of favour under Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich.

McCoist thinks Mane’s wages could put Newcastle off

Now Ally McCoist has hinted that Newcastle could be interested in the 31-year-old this summer saying on TalkSPORT‘s breakfast show (via HITC) when asked if Tyneside could be a possible destination: “That’s a potential.”

“That’s perhaps one. They probably can’t afford the wages he is on. But they would certainly look after him. I still think there is a better chance of him going somewhere like Italy.”

Given that Mane is on an eye-watering £306,000-a-week, McCoist may have a point there. Newcastle are not in the position to offer those kinds of wages, nor would they really want to.

However, if the Magpies could bring his wages under control, Mane would be a fantastic signing to help them navigate a tricky season with European football on top of what is shaping up to be a massive Premier League campaign. Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron once claimed that Mane is the best he’s ever faced.

Mane has won the Premier League and Champions League

Mane has won the Premier League and Champions League as well as many other trophies, so he knows exactly what is required of a team to achieve success, and that’s the kind of experience Newcastle sorely lack right now.

Bayern Munich are looking to offload Mane in the summer after struggling to break into Thomas Tuchel’s first-team plans since recovering from injury in February. Despite not featuring as much as he’d like, Mane has still managed to score 12 goals in 37 appearances while providing six assists, so it’s not like he’s been a complete failure.

As amazing as I think Mane would be for Newcastle, I don’t see this one happening. His age and his wage demands would make this one very unlikely, unless he was willing to take a massive pay-cut this one is probably a non-starter.
