Ally McCoist completely disagrees with what is happening to 28-year-old Newcastle target

As it stands, Newcastle United will not be signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City this month.

The Magpies have cooled their interest in the 28-year-old, having decided that Manchester City’s demands are simply too much.

They are looking for a sizeable loan fee to take the midfielder on loan for the rest of the season – potentially as much as £7million. On top of that, Man City want any deal to include an obligation to buy in the summer.

That is a commitment that Newcastle are unwilling to make, which has resulted in them taking a step back to look at alternatives.

However, the Magpies’ position has been weakened due to the fact that their need for a midfielder has only intensified this week. It has been reported that Joelinton could be out for the rest of the season, leaving Eddie Howe with just three fit centre midfielders.

That is why we need someone like Phillips to arrive, and pundit Ally McCoist does not agree with the stance that Manchester City have taken regarding the England international.

Ally McCoist does not agree with Manchester City stance

McCoist has spoke about Phillips’ future on TalkSPORT’s YouTube channel, and believes that Man City should be lowering their demands.

“I feel for the lad to be honest“ he said.

“I just think he has to go and get playing again. Personally I think Newcastle would be a terrific move for him, I really do.

“I understand what City are doing trying to get the money back that they paid Leeds for him. However, the argument against that is that we can’t remember what he looks like let alone what he played like, so how can they demand the same money?“

Newcastle don’t want to overspend on Kalvin Phillips

McCoist is right. What Manchester City are asking for is simply too much. Obviously they want as much money as possible, but surely they have to realise that they are hurting Phillips’ career at this stage.

He needs to go and play football, but that likely will not happen unless Man City soften their stance. If they don’t then there is no chance that he will be on his way to St James’ Park.

Newcastle are already wary of overspending, and they will certainly not do it on a player they are seemingly not fully sold on. There is clearly a reluctance to commit long-term to Phillips, which is understandable.

But the issue is that Newcastle need a short-term answer to their problems right now, and Man City’s current demands mean that Phillips could be a costly solution.
