Newcastle United supporters enjoyed a rather fine Boxing Day.
Despite having a pretty dreadful record on this particular festive day over the years, Newcastle kept up their fine form with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa at St James’ Park.

The result took Eddie Howe’s side up to fifth in the Premier League table, which could well put them in contention for Champions League football next season.
Anthony Gordon opened the scoring early with a brilliant strike before Alexander Isak and Joelinton ensured another statement win for the Newcastle United manager on Tyneside.
There were a number of big performances throughout the team as Newcastle put in yet another strong display.
The red card shown to Villa striker Jhon Duran may have been reasonably controversial but Newcastle were more than good value for their victory.

Speaking after the game, club legend Alan Shearer picked out one particularly good moment from a certain Bruno Guimaraes.
Alan Shearer says Bruno Guimaraes did something “really special” against Aston Villa
Indeed, the Brazilian was involved in the build-up to Isak’s strike, stabbing through a lovely through ball to Jacob Murphy to eventually square to the Sweden star.
Talking on BBC Match of the Day, Shearer: “You’re about to see a really special pass here from Guimaraes.
“The outside of the right boot, the weight of pass into Murphy.”
Bruno Guimaraes is flourishing in his new position at Newcastle
For so long, Guimaraes was the beating heart of this Newcastle team in the No.6 role. Still, with Tonali now shining there, the Brazilian has been moved further forward.
Howe has been impressed with his displays in a more advanced role and it’s easy to see why. In the last six games across all competitions, Guimaraes has provided three assists while scoring two goals.
With quality like that on show, there’s little reason Guimaraes cannot continue to add to his tally going forward.
The tactical change made by Howe has given the Brazilian a new lease of life.
