Alexander Isak scored his first Premier League hat-trick and is chasing down Alan Shearer’s goal record with two games remaining in 2024.
Newcastle are in action during the traditional Boxing Day fixtures and are up against fellow European-chasing side Aston Villa, who currently sit sixth in the Premier League table – two points above the Magpies.
Unai Emery’s side beat reigning champions Manchester City 2-1 in their latest match, so a trip to Villa Park is a daunting one for Newcastle and our Boxing Day record won’t fill fans with much hope.

Newcastle United’s terrible Boxing Day record
Newcastle fans are used to having their Boxing Day spoiled by football after a dreadful run of results on the 26th of December.
In fact, Newcastle have lost more matches on Boxing Day than any other side in English football with 47 defeats.
It has historically been a terrible fixture for Newcastle, and that has certainly been the case over the past decade.
Here is a look at Newcastle United’s last 10 results on Boxing Day (or matches played on 27th December)
- Newcastle 1-3 Nottingham Forest – 2023
- Leicester 0-3 Newcastle – 2022
- Newcastle 1-1 Man United – 2021
- Man City 2-0 Newcastle – 2020
- Man United 4-1 Newcastle – 2019
- Liverpool 4-0 Newcastle – 2018
- Newcastle 0-1 Man City – 2017
- Newcastle 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday – 2016
- Newcastle 0-1 Everton – 2015
- Man United 3-1 Newcastle – 2014
Remarkably, Newcastle’s only victory in the past 10 Boxing Day fixtures is the 3-0 win over Leicester in 2022 which lifted the Magpies up to second in the Premier League table.
Another interesting finding is that Newcastle have played Manchester United three times on Boxing Day in the last 10 years and they will face the Red Devils in a festive fixture again when the two sides meet on 30th December.

Newcastle United are training at Christmas under Eddie Howe
Howe will be eager to continue Newcastle’s winning streak, and that means no days off on Christmas.
In his pre-match press conference, Howe confirmed that his players will be training on Christmas Day: “We will get them in training but we won’t keep them for any longer than they need to be at the training ground and then they can enjoy Christmas like everyone else.”
Howe is expected to qualify for Europe this season and if he can successfully buck the trend of Newcastle’s terrible Boxing Day record then the Magpies could move within two points of the top four.
The fixtures continue to come thick and fast next month too with Newcastle playing six times in January, including the first leg of their Carabao Cup clash against Arsenal.
