It was tight, but Newcastle United managed to buy the two strikers they so desperately needed this summer.
They broke their transfer record to sign Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart. At £69million, he is Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever.
After that, Newcastle bought Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55million. That deal was not completed until the final seconds of the transfer window, but they managed to get it over the line.
Newcastle have overspent on Wissa, but that was purely out of necessity. Selling Isak without another striker coming in would have been a major error, which is why the Magpies simply had to do whatever it took to bring the 29-year-old to Tyneside.
They did have alternatives to Wissa, one of which was Jorgen Strand Larsen. However, it has now been reported that Newcastle were wasting their time when it came to the giant Norwegian.

Newcastle United were never going to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen
Before securing a deal for Wissa, Newcastle went big on Strand Larsen.
They made two massive offers for the striker, going as high as £55million. Geordie Boot Boys were told that Strand Larsen wanted to join Newcastle, despite only completing a permanent move to Wolves earlier that summer.
However, a new update from the Daily Mail has revealed that Newcastle’s pursuit of the 25-year-old was largely in vain.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle had received encouragement from agents to move for Strand Larsen.
However, they add that the move was ‘futile from the start’, as Wolves had no interest in selling their star striker.
Two more strikers Newcastle United wasted their time trying to sign
Strand Larsen was not the only striker who Newcastle tried to sign before ultimately failing. In truth, not being able to sign a striker was the story of Eddie Howe’s summer before landing Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.
In terms of wasted pursuits, the first was Hugo Ekitike. Newcastle thought they were going to break their transfer record on the Frenchman, and even had visions of him playing alongside Alexander Isak at St James’ Park.
Alas, Ekitike always wanted to join Liverpool and ultimately did. They swooped in to hijack Newcastle’s move, paying £79million to Eintracht Frankfurt.
The next major target Newcastle had was Benjamin Sesko. However, there was always a feeling that he really wanted to go to Manchester United.
It was reported that Newcastle were strung along in the Sesko pursuit, with the Slovenian striker ending up at Old Trafford.
That was more time wasted, but Newcastle thankfully managed to get the two strikers they needed before the end of the window.
