At the start of the year, Newcastle United looked into the possibility of signing Daichi Kamada on a free. Now that opportunity is on the Magpies’ doorstep.

It was reported in February that Newcastle were considering a summer move for Kamada, whose Eintracht Frankfurt contract was going to expire.

The Japan international was going to become a free agent, but it looked like it would not be for long. First it was reported that he was going to sign for Borussia Dortmund, then it looked like he would be off to Italy.

Kamada had agreed a deal with AC Milan last month, but now that deal is off. And that means that Newcastle could be back in the conversation.

Newcastle offered Daichi Kamada

According to 90min, Newcastle are one of multiple clubs who have been offered the chance to sign Kamada by his representatives.

The attacking midfielder has also been offered to Totteham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Napoli and Dortmund once again.

He is probably the best free agent around right now. At the age of 26, he is coming into his peak years as a footballer, yet he is available for absolutely nothing.

Kamada has done brilliantly in a strong Frankfurt team in recent years, helping them win the 2022 Europa League. That led them into the Champions League, which is where Newcastle will be this season.

A strong attacking midfielder who Thierry Henry loves

Eddie Howe is looking to sign an attacking midfielder, having decided against signing James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai. They have joined Tottenham and Liverpool respectively.

Both players were deemed to be too expensive, but the Magpies would not have that problem with Kamada. While he might not be on the same level, his success in the Bundesliga should make him an appealing option for the Toon recruitment that are very wary of FFP.

In all competitions last season, Kamada scored 16 goals and provided seven assists. That equals 23 goal contributions, which is a very impressive amount. It is more than Maddison (19) got and the same as Szoboszlai (23) managed.

He is also a player who caught Thierry Henry’s attention last season. The Arsenal legend was impressed with Kamada during the Champions League group stage, calling him a ‘very good player’ who he really likes. Henry was a big fan of the midfielder’s ability to arrive in the box in score, which is something Kevin Nolan did brilliantly at St James’ Park back in the day.

If Kamada is good enough for Henry, he’s good enough for Newcastle. AC Milan have opened the door by pulling out of a deal, and the opportunity is there if the Magpies want it.
