Newcastle United are reportedly keeping an eye on Japan international Daichi Kamada ahead of the summer transfer window.
That is according to 90min, who claim that the Magpies are one of multiple Premier League clubs who are considering a move for the Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder.
Kamada currently plays in the Bundesliga for Frankfurt, but could be on the move at the end of the season. His contract with the German side is set to expire this summer, which is why a plethora of clubs are eyeing his signature.
Alongside Newcastle, 90min add that Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are all pondering a move for the 26-year-old.
He is enjoying a brilliant season with Frankfurt, boasting 18 goal contributions in all competitions so far. That includes three goals in the Champions League, which his side qualified for after winning the 2022 Europa League.
Daichi Kamada tormented West Ham
On their journey to the final, Frankfurt played West Ham in the semi finals. And Kamada played a key role in the German side knocking the Hammers out.
He scored the winning goal in the first leg, netting a priceless away goal at the London Stadium and giving his side the advantage going into the second game.
Frankfurt won the second leg too, and went on to beat Rangers in the final on penalties with Kamada scoring his spot kick in Seville.
The attacking midfielder played a key role in Frankfurt lifting the trophy, and was particularly impressive against David Moyes’ side. Former striker Carlton Cole admitted that Kamada ‘gave West Ham absolute nightmares‘ when talking about him during ITV’s World Cup coverage.
Good option for Newcastle
With Newcastle looking to stay on the right side of financial fair play, especially give Manchester City’s current issues, a free transfer for someone like Kamada would be a great option this summer.
He is a really intelligent player, and is capable of playing in an advanced role or as a slightly deeper midfielder. What he brings is goals and assists, which is what Eddie Howe will be looking for when the summer transfer window opens.
The Toon boss needs a midfielder who can offer something different, and Kamada has the ability to do just that.
It looks like he is going to be a man in demand this summer, but Newcastle will fancy their chances – especially if we qualify for the Champions League.
If Kamada did sign for the Magpies, he would become just the second Japanese player to represent the club after Yoshinori Muto.
