£62m superstar would refuse to join Newcastle United if Alexander Isak stays

Whether Alexander Isak stays or goes, Newcastle United need to sign a striker this summer.

There is set to be a rebuild at St James’ Park, with Newcastle wanting three outfield signings.

One key position of interest is striker, with Callum Wilson on course to leave the club when his contract expires. There are also fears over Alexander Isak’s future, despite the 25-year-old probably being too expensive for any of his suitors.

As the summer looms, Newcastle United are looking at potential targets. Liam Delap is on Newcastle’s radar, for example.

But he is not the only option that the Magpies have looked at. According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have been watching Benjamin Sesko ahead of the summer transfer window.

Update on Benjamin Sesko’s future amid Newcastle United rumour

That is incredibly exciting, but there is good news and bad news when it comes to the Magpies pursuing RB Leizpig’s talisman.

That is according to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, who has spoken to Geordie Boot Boys about Sesko’s future at RB Leipzig.

“It is almost certain that Benjamin Sesko will come to the Premier League this summer,” he said.

“His people have denied that he is set on a move to London, but Arsenal and Chelsea still lead the race. Interestingly, Liverpool have also done some work on him. He does have a release clause, but there is also an agreement with Leipzig to facilitate a move for less than that release clause.

“Sesko would be on Newcastle’s radar if Alexander Isak were to leave. If Isak stays, Sesko is not going to come and play second fiddle.

“Even if Isak stays, Newcastle want a striker to replace Callum Wilson. However, they are looking at very different options.”

Why Benjamin Sesko to Newcastle United is unlikely

It only makes sense for Newcastle to target Sesko if Isak leaves – and if they are in the Champions League.

With the Slovenian forward seemingly destined to join a Premier League club, it only feels right to assume that he will join a club that is competing in the Champions League.

But St James’ Park will not be Sesko’s new home as long is Isak remains on Tyneside. After all, a player of Sesko’s calibre is not going to arrive as Isak’s deputy.

And even if he was keen to fill that role, it is difficult to envision Newcastle spending huge money on a backup striker. It has been reported by Sky Sports that Sesko’s release clause is currently worth £62million, which would make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever.

All roads point towards Sesko not joining Newcastle United, but that is not a great shame if it means Isak is staying put.
