Newcastle United’s most exciting target of the summer is now set for transfer talks with another club.

The Magpies have a summer transfer budget of £100million, with Paul Mitchell tasked with adding a new winger and centre-back to Eddie Howe’s squad.

It is clear that Newcastle United need a sprinkling of quality ahead of the new season, particularly in attack. Howe needs a top level forward to join Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon in the final third, while Miguel Almiron is also a player who Newcastle could sell.

Whether Almiron leaves or not, Newcastle need a new right winger. They need someone who can take them to the next level.

Newcastle United linked with Nico Williams

Nico Williams would certainly do that, and he is on the Magpies’ radar.

The Spain international is a long-term target, with Newcastle eyeing Williams before they signed Anthony Gordon in January 2023.

Fast forward to the summer of 2024 and it has been reported by the Athletic that Newcastle have discussed making a move for Williams.

The 22-year-old would be an incredible addition at St James’ Park, and he is certainly an affordable option given his £47million release clause.

However, there are problems. His wage demands are extreme, while Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Williams wants to sign for Barcelona this summer.

Barcelona plan to make their move

Barca president Joan Laporta recently stated that they can afford Williams, and now they appear to be making their move.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who has provided an update on Williams’ Athletic Bilbao future via his X account.

Romano wrote: “Barcelona are prepared to advance in talks with Nico Williams’ camp starting from this week, as salary structure is key factor to move forward. Hansi Flick has already approved Nico as top target for this summer. Timing is key as Premier League clubs are also there.”

Euro 2024 heroics makes Williams deal impossible for Newcastle

Williams would be a dream signing for Newcastle United, but a move to Tyneside has become increasingly more unlikely throughout Euro 2024.

The winger was absolutely outstanding for Spain, and even managed to score in the final as they beat England 2-1.

He is the type of player that PIF would love to sign this summer, but there are various reasons why it will not be possible. Firstly, his wage demands are too high, while Newcastle do not have the lure of European football.

On top of that, there is Williams’ desire to sign for Barcelona. That is where he wants to be, and their desire to sign him has probably only intensified during Euro 2024.

He was always an ambitious target for Newcastle, but it is now Barcelona who are making their move in the aftermath of the Euros.
