£44m Newcastle target could now replace ‘exciting’ 22-year-old at PL rivals

Newcastle United’s search for a new centre-back could lead them to Sven Botman’s fellow Dutchman Perr Schuurs.

He is reportedly on the Magpies’ radar during this summer’s transfer window, with Schuurs being heavily linked with a £44million move away from Torino.

The defender has hinted that he could leave the Serie A side in the coming months, while his agent has suggested that a move away could be agreed if it suits all parties.

Schuurs wants to play at the highest level, which is where Newcastle will be next season, as they prepare to return to the Champions League.

The 23-year-old could be a smart addition, as Eddie Howe looks for someone to eventually replace the impressive Fabian Schar. He has been revitalised by the Toon boss, but is now on the wrong side of 30.

That will lead to Newcastle bringing someone else in, and it could end in the Magpies having two Dutch players patrolling the backline.

But while a centre-back pairing of Schuurs and Botman is appealing, the former is now on the radar of another Premier League club.

According to the Daily Mail, Crystal Palace are interested in signing Schuurs from Torino.

The report states that he has been identified as the player to replace Marc Guehi, who could be on his way out of Selhurst Park this summer.

Some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs are interested in the ‘exciting‘ 22-year-old, who has been seriously impressive since leaving Chelsea for Crystal Palace in 2021. It has even led to him becoming an England international.

That form could now see him leave Palace, meaning the Eagles will need to secure a replacement. And that could result in Toon target Schuurs making the move.

If Palace do decide to test the waters with a bid, it will be interesting to see if Newcastle will respond with an offer of their own. That will likely be the litmus test for just how serious the Magpies’ interest in the defender is.
