Newcastle United failed to secure a new centre-back in the summer transfer window but were consistently linked with an interest in Danish defender Joachim Andersen.
The Crystal Palace defender was tracked by Newcastle and Tottenham over the summer and although a move was starting to look close, Joachim Andersen remains at Palace.
One of the big stumbling blocks over the move was Crystal Palace’s £40million valuation of the 27-year-old for whom they paid Lyon just £15million in 2021 following a successful loan spell at Fulham.
Andersen has admitted he is open to a move away from Palace
Speaking to Ekstra Bladet in his native Denmark, Andersen has how admitted there was interest in him from other clubs this summer but ‘nothing concrete’ but he’s not ruled out leaving Crystal Palace in the near future.
“There were a few things back and forth, but nothing concrete,” said Andersen. “It’s not always something I’m in control of. I want to play in the biggest and best clubs in the world, but it is not always up to me when to change.”

“But I’m 27, and if I’m going to make a transfer, it should preferably be within the next few years. I’m not getting any younger, and if a club is going to pay for me, they have to be able to see some perspective in it too,” he added.
Newcastle could return with a bid for Andersen in January
Given that Newcastle’s refusal to sign a centre-back is already haunting them with both Fabian Schar and Sven Botman having picked up knocks early on, there could be scope for the club to dip into the transfer window again in January to rectify the situation.

Whether the desperation would be such that they’d fork out £40million for Andersen is unlikely, but we have seen how hard Newcastle’s board can negotiate so a deal could be reached.
My only issue is that Andersen is 27 and I’d prefer us to go for someone younger, around about the same age as Botman so that we can build up a long-term defensive pairing. Although Andersen should still have plenty of years left in him.
