Newcastle United winger Ryan Fraser is the player ‘most likely’ to leave St James’ Park this month, according to journalist Ross Gregory.

Speaking on the NUFC Matters Transfer Show for Steve Wraith’s YouTube channel, the Chronicle Live man claimed it is the 28-year-old Scotsman who has the most realistic prospect of leaving the Toon during the January window.

“In terms of outgoings, Ryan Fraser is the obvious one,” Gregory said.

“You can see how far down the pecking order he is at Newcastle now.

“I do think he’s the one who is probably most likely to go this month.

“There’ll be one or two [who go] but it’ll be closer to the end of the month, with the odd loan deal in the final days or even hours of the transfer window.”

Fraser could leave this month

Since joining from Bournemouth in 2020, Fraser has made 59 appearances for the north-east outfit, during which he has totalled three goals and six assists.

However, in the Premier League this season, the attacker has amassed just eight appearances. Only three of these have come from the starting XI, while the vast majority have come in the last 25 minutes of a game.

Having fallen out of contention on Tyneside, the 28-year-old is now surplus to Eddie Howe’s requirements.

Therefore, for everyone involved, the best course of action would be to sanction a sale.

With two-and-a-half-years left on his Newcastle deal, the Magpies would see a return on his departure. For Fraser, he would be sure to get game-time elsewhere.

Instead of rotting on the bench at St James’ Park, a move away would be the kindest solution to all parties involved.
