One of Newcastle United’s January transfer targets was set to head to St James’ Park later this month, but that will no longer be happening.

After drawing 4-4 with Luton Town on Saturday, Newcastle’s next match at St James’ Park is against Bournemouth on February 17th.

The Magpies will be looking for revenge against the Cherries, who beat Eddie Howe’s side 2-0 back in November courtesy of a Dominic Solanke brace.

It is going to be a must-win game for Newcastle, while it also looked like it would be a chance to get a closer look at one of our January targets.

Philip Billing was on the Magpies’ radar as they searched for a new midfielder following Joelinton’s injury, with the Denmark international identified as a cheaper alternative to Everton’s Amadou Onana.

In the end, neither of them arrived in January, and Billing will not be on Tyneside later this month with his current club Bournemouth.

That is because Billing is going to be suspended for Newcastle United vs Bournemouth on February 17th.

The £15million man was sent off at the weekend, receiving a straight red card during the Cherries’ 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest. Billing was given his marching orders in the 84th minute after a foul on Callum Hudson-Odoi.

There were plenty of protests from Bournemouth, but replays showed just how dangerous a challenge it was. It may have only looked like he had stopped a counterattack, but he also stood on the Forest winger’s Achilles with his studs. It was nasty, and Billing will now serve a three-game ban.

That means that he will not be involved against Newcastle in just under a fortnight. Toon officials will therefore miss out on the chance to see him at St James’ Park, as they continue to make plans for the summer transfer window.

Newcastle will surely be in the market for a midfielder once again, but whether or not they reignite their interest in Billing remains to seen. Sadly for him, he will not get the chance to show the Magpies firsthand what he is capable of.
