Last night Fabrizio Romano issued an update on the situation surrounding in-demand Newcastle target Arda Guler regarding his release clause.
It’s now well known that Arda Guler has a release clause that just activated meaning any interested clubs would have to cough up just €17.5million (£15million) to Fenerbahce for their 18-year-old midfielder who has been tipped as one of the hottest prospects in football.
However, now Fabrizio Romano has provided more details and it turns out that the situation isn’t as cut and dry as it seems, which would explain why Arda Guler remains at Fenerbahce for now despite interest from all over Europe.
Arda Guler’s release clause is more complicated than first thought
Newcastle have been keeping a close eye on the youngster who has been likened to Lionel Messi and have even held talks with his family over a move, but the Magpies are one of many interested parties. Not to mention that Fenerbahce are trying to get Arda Guler to sign a new contract that will not contain a release clause.
Fabrizio Romano has now said that there are more things at play than just the clause which is potentially putting off potential buyers. Speaking on his YouTube Channel, Romano said: “The release clause of Arda Guler is €17.5million, but keep an eye on because this is not a traditional kind of release clause. There are other things to clarify internally at Fenerbahce because they are still trying to speak to Arda Guler to keep the player but also on the player side.

“It is really, really important to understand on the player side that having that type of release clause, the main problem is about the signing fee, it’s about the commission and so it’s complicated to sign Arda Guler. He wants to play football, he doesn’t want to go to a club where he’s playing on the bench, he really wants to play football.
“Also, they’re asking on the player’s side for really important commissions so the rumours on the commission are absolutely confirmed, and this is why it’s important to understand that for many clubs there is interest.
“I can tell you for example that he’s not going to PSG because they are not happy with this kind of crazy situation around this fantastic talent, but it’s also true that at the moment it’s complicated to sign Arda Guler.
“Before saying he’s going to this club or the other remember that he wants to play, he doesn’t want to be on the bench and the financial package is way more than the €17.5million release clause and also Fenerbahce are still trying their best to keep the player, to extent the contract, to keep him on loan, to find a solution.”
Newcastle could buy Guler this summer and loan him back to Fenerbahce
Romano also rhymed off a list of teams that are known to want Arda Guler this summer, interestingly, Newcastle’s name wasn’t mentioned, but we know from previous reports that there’s a definite interest there.

If Guler can live up to his potential then he’d be an absolutely phenomenal signing. However, I don’t know if Eddie Howe would throw him into the first-team right away which could be a stumbling block given his desire to play.
That being said, I’ve mentioned before that if Newcastle loaned Guler back to Fenerbahce for a year as part of the deal then it would be a win-win.
