Journalist Alex Crook has suggested that there’s one Newcastle United player who will want to leave in the summer after the January interest shown in him.
There’s been suggestions that Newcastle are going to have to sell some key players pretty soon if they want to be able to develop their squad into one of the best in the Premier League.
Despite rejecting multiple bids from Bayern Munich for Kieran Trippier in January, Crook claimed on talkSPORT that the defender is still going to want to leave the club in six months time.
January interest has turned Newcastle star’s head
The interest shown from Bayern has certainly planted a seed in Trippier’s head with the right-back having just 18 months left on his current deal at Newcastle.
It may be that while an offer has been rejected this month, there’s still a strong chance that the former Tottenham man will be hoping to join his former teammates over in Germany by next season.
It’s believed that the offers Newcastle rejected were valued at around the £12m mark with Newcastle deeming that too low, but whether that changes in the summer is still unclear.
Newcastle can at least take comfort in the fact they have a suitable replacement waiting to step up in Tino Livramento, but you can’t as easily replace the leadership and experience that Trippier possesses .
On the show, Crook said: “I think he was open to it, the chance to go and join the biggest club in Germany, the chance to play Champions League football in the second half of the season.
“I guess maybe Trippier will be hoping that interest from Bayern might still be there come the summer when he’ll only have a year left on his contract.
“Maybe, it’s an easier deal to do in the summer transfer window than halfway through the season.”
Newcastle could overhaul their squad in the summer
Newcastle in parts do have a bit of an aging squad with certain players either approaching or over the age of the 30 now and while they are still quality footballers, the ownership will want to be looking to the future.
This may mean that the likes of Trippier, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron are all to be replaced with younger versions in order to maximise the profits from these players who may decrease in value in the next 12 months.
WIth a young manager at the helm, Newcastle will want to build a squad that can be very successful for them across the next decade and already have a brilliant start with Sven Botman, Livramento, Lewis Hall, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon all 24 or younger.
This summer will be huge for both incomings and outgoings and may define Newcastle’s long term future, so no pressure.
