Newcastle United are preparing to return to Wembley Stadium for this month’s 2025 Carabao Cup final.

Eddie Howe has a chance to cement his name in Newcastle United history if he is able to lead the Magpies to their first major honour in 70 years.

Newcastle will face Premier League leaders Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday, 16th March after comfortably beating Arsenal over two legs in the semi-final.

It has been two years since Newcastle were last at Wembley for the 2023 Carabao Cup final, which resulted in a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Newcastle are hoping to go one step better this time around, but their recent history at Wembley is bleak. Before that though, Newcastle enjoyed a 50-year run of being unbeaten in Wembley finals.

Newcastle United record at Wembley

Wembley was opened to the public in 1923, and just 12 months later Newcastle made their first visit to the stadium.

Newcastle’s first-ever trip to Wembley in 1924 saw the Magpies lift their second FA Cup in club history. Goals from Neil Harris and Stan Seymour made the difference.

Just eight years later, Newcastle were back at Wembley for another FA Cup final, and once again the Magpies lifted the trophy after beating Arsenal 2-1 with Jack Allen scoring a brace.

However, there was controversy surrounding the result when newsreel footage showed the ball going out of play just before Newcastle’s equaliser.

Newcastle’s next FA Cup triumph came at the start of the 1950s – a golden era for the Tyneside outfit. Jackie Milburn scored twice against a Blackpool side that included Stanley Matthews.

George Robledo scored the only goal of the game against Arsenal as Newcastle defended their FA Cup crown a year later.

Newcastle maintained their 100% success rate at Wembley when they added a sixth FA Cup to the trophy cabinet. Jackie Milburn, Bobby Mitchell and George Hannah all scored for Newcastle in what remains the club’s last trophy.

This marks the start of Newcastle’s misfortune at Wembley. Kevin Keegan’s Liverpool side dominated Newcastle at Wembley to pip the Toon to the FA Cup.

Newcastle and Howe will be desperate to avoid a repeat later this month.

Two years later, Newcastle had a chance to return to winning ways at Wembley but Tyneside-born Dennis Tueart scored an impressive winner for Manchester City.

Hardly a cup final, but Newcastle faced up against Premier League champions Manchester United in 1996, with Alan Shearer lining up for the Toon after rejecting the Red Devils. Goals from Cantona, Butt, Beckham and Keane handed Newcastle a heavy defeat in the capital.

Another goalless visit to Wembley as goals from Mark Overmars and Nicolas Anelka gave Arsenal a 2-0 victory over Kenny Dalglish’s Newcastle.

A year on from the Arsenal defeat, Newcastle once again found themselves in the FA Cup final but they suffered another 2-0 defeat, this time to Manchester United – who went on to complete a treble a week later.

Newcastle’s last trip to a cup final ended in an identical defeat to Manchester United with Casemiro and Marcus Rashford scoring in a six-minute spell.

Newcastle United must end wretched record at Wembley

After five straight wins at Wembley, Newcastle are now winless in their last six cup finals – that is the challenge that lies ahead for Howe.

Howe has made changes to Newcastle’s approach after claiming he and his players were “exhausted” by the build-up to the 2023 final.

But Newcastle do not head into the final in good form. The nine-game winning streak now seems like a distant memory and three defeats in the last four matches will cause concern.

Especially as one of those defeats was Newcastle losing 2-0 to Liverpool – the side they will face at Wembley.

But the trip to Wembley will have a different feel to it and there is everything to play for.
