On August 19 1982, Kevin Keegan signed for Newcastle United from Southampton for a fee of £100,000.

In the modern game, very few deals come with so much excitement that fans flood the ground to get a glimpse of their newest star. Fans will remember Alan Shearer’s unveiling as a Newcastle United player, when the streets outside St James’ Park were packed with fans who wanted to see their hometown hero return.

That same air of excitement was present when Newcastle signed Kevin Keegan from Southampton in 1982. A press conference was held at the Gosforth Park Hotel to announce his signing, with the attacker stating that he knew one day he would play for the Magpies.

Keegan went on to become one of Newcastle’s greatest-ever players, even if his time at the club only lasted two years. From there, Keegan became Newcastle manager in 1992 and got them agonisingly close to winning the Premier League title in 1996.

Even to this day, fans recognise Keegan as a Newcastle legend for his efforts as a player and a manager. In an interview some time later, Keegan explained what he was told by fans before his debut against Queens Park Rangers 43 years ago.

Kevin Keegan was shocked at the Newcastle United atmosphere

St James’ Park is a ground known for keeping the noise in and making a harsh environment for the opponents to play in.

With talk of a new stadium being built in favour of St James’ Park, some may forget how much of a driving force the fans are to get results. That was evident during the 2024/25 campaign, where the noise from the fans was a clear advantage for the Magpies.

Keegan was idolised by Shearer and many others who have gone on to play for Newcastle. They watched him at St James’ Park and brought the noise when he was a player.

“I can remember (my debut) vividly,” Keegan said on Sky Sports

“Whatever you thought (the crowd) was going to be, people were saying ‘you’re not gonna be able to believe what it’s like tomorrow’. And I’m thinking, ‘you know, I’ve played at Liverpool, I’ve played in a European cup final in Rome, I’ve played at Wembley’. Never knew anything like it, the noise.

“I go to Norway and Malaysia doing TV programmes, and people say to me, ‘I’m going to England, what ground should I go to?’ I said, ‘If you’ve only got one ground to go to, go to St James’ Park’.

“I don’t think even anywhere else in England gets near. It’s something to do with where (the ground) is in the city. That is the cathedral. When you go past the Angel of the North, it’s there.”

How Kevin Keegan performed on his Newcastle United debut

Keegan will always be remembered for his years at Newcastle, both as a player and manager.

One of Newcastle’s best managers ever, Keegan helped the Magpies out of the Second Division as a player and a head coach, while mentoring other legends on Tyneside. Peter Beardsley was taken under Keegan’s wing at Newcastle, and he then became a top-class midfielder for several clubs.

Keegan was known for his goals on Tyneside, and of course, he scored on debut for the Magpies. Upon scoring, Keegan decided to jump into the crowd and celebrate with the Newcastle fans.

When asked why he did it in his post-match interview, Keegan said: “I just wanted to stay there forever…”

There is hope that one day Keegan can return to St James’ Park and see what Newcastle have become since the takeover. It has been years since the club legend has been seen at the ground, but hopefully that will change soon.
