Who is Newcastle’s player of the season so far?

Newcastle United don’t have many candidates for player of the season so far.

It’s been a rough campaign for the Magpies, who are embroiled in a relegation battle. While there’s been celebrations off the pitch, things have been incredibly difficult on it.

At the halfway stage, our Premier League status is hanging in the balance.

But despite our woeful form, there have been some decent performers in a black and white shirt.

Who’s in the running for Newcastle?

One candidate for Newcastle’s player of the season so far is Allan Saint-Maximin.

In the early weeks of the season, the Frenchman was our star. He carried the team on his back, and every moment of magic went through him.

His end product was improving too. The 24-year-old currently has seven goal contributions, with three goals and four assists.

However, performances have dipped in recent weeks. Saint-Maximin has become a bit more unreliable, and a lack of consistency will cost him the title of Newcastle’s player of the season so far.

Sadly, there aren’t many more candidates. Joelinton is one player you could make a case for, but that’s more down to the incredible improvement shown rather than his actual performances.

Saint-Maximin seems unrivalled, but there is one man who eclipses him.

Callum Wilson is our player of the season so far

While Saint-Maximin’s inconsistencies have been there for the world to see, Callum Wilson has been anything but.

With the number nine on his back, Wilson has been everything you’d expect him to be.

He’s been reliable as ever in front of goal, scoring six times in the Premier League. And we’ve seen all sorts of goals from the 29-year-old.

He’s been a poacher with three close range headers. He netted from the spot against Norwich, while he cleverly rounded the keeper versus Burnley. But the pick of the lot was his overhead equaliser against Crystal Palace.

His goals have won us key points, most notably our first win of the season against Sean Dyche’s Clarets.

While his fitness woes have been a problem once again, Wilson has consistently delivered when he’s been on the pitch.

If we’re going to survive, Callum Wilson’s form is going to be pivotal. But for now, he is Newcastle United’s player of the season so far.
