Newcastle United’s Premier League survival was confirmed on Monday when Fulham lost 2-0 to Burnley.
It means that, with no cup competition to speak of this season, Newcastle can start thinking about what the next campaign can offer.
With the takeover looming over the club – as it has done for the past year or so – it could mean that money for summer additions is in short supply.
This mid-table club would surely want to move up the league table next season, and we dare we say, compete for a top-ten place or enjoy a cup run.
But how to go about this? What’s the largest issue pinning them down?
Some would argue the most obvious issue is the inability of the club’s manager Steve Bruce who, according to the Times, has thrown his future at St James’ Park in doubt – although it must be pointed out that he has also told Sky Sports that he hopes to be in charge of the Magpies next season as well.
It’s an interesting move, considering, as per the Times, the manager has the backing of Mike Ashley, despite the turbulent season.

At first glance it might some a bizarre move from Bruce – just as his side have saved themselves from the drop to the Championship and could well move up the table this season, he has stated his future might lie elsewhere.
His words might’ve come about owing to the prospect of fans returning to the ground next season; it could be argued that Bruce has been saved from the wrath of the supporters this season, saving his blushes. But that’s something he will have to contend with in 2021-22.
Indeed, Bruce might well see the time to move on is now after guiding Newcastle to two mid-table seasons campaign. In that, he will leave behind a legacy in which he could find work in the future, this time not out of his depth.

And if this was to happen, a new manager would give fans a huge boost for when they are back; if too, Ashley decides to match or increase last summer’s total spending. With the squad they have, and given the reluctance to spend from their owner, Newcastle could enjoy a far better campaign under a manager who wants to play expansive football and allow the attacking players to flourish.
