Miguel Almiron is about to leave Newcastle United after six years at the club.

It is an emotional farewell for one of Newcastle’s longstanding players – the time feels right for him to move on.

It has been confirmed that Almiron is travelling to Atlanta to complete a medical ahead of a move which could see Newcastle net around £11m.

Newcastle’s win against Southampton looks to be the last game Almiron will play for the club. Toon boss Eddie Howe pushed Almiron towards the Newcastle fans to give him a moment to thank the fans for his time on Tyneside.

Fans and players chanted for Almiron during the moment which has turned out to be a final hurrah for the Paraguayan.

The 30-year-old was able to feature in the game thanks to Atlanta’s blessing, the MLS side were happy to wait for Almiron as their season does not start until later in February.

With Almiron now departing it leaves sporting director Paul Mitchell with a void to fill in Newcastle’s first-team squad. Here are three right wingers who Mitchell should consider as Almiron’s replacement.

Johan Bakayoko

PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko has enjoyed a fine season for the Eredivisie leaders. The 21-year-old has made 26 appearances in all competitions this campaign, including seven in the Champions League.

The Belgian international’s seven goals this season shows he has an eye for the net – something Howe will love. The Magpies rank amongst the lowest for different goalscorers in the Premier League this season so another body that can score goals is key.

Newcastle are linked with Bakayoko who was priced at £50m. However, circumstances have now changed and Bakayoko will cost Newcastle just £21m in January after turning down a new contract with the Dutch club.

Ernest Nuamah

A young winger from Ghana, Ernest Nuamah has impressed in his 864 minutes across all competitions for Ligue 1 side Lyon this season.

Nuamah is a player who loves to play with the ball at his feet – you are likely to see him running down the right-hand side and working hard to get a dangerous cross in the box. This would be perfect for Alexander Isak who can get on the end of the ball in the penalty area.

So far this season, Nuamah has scored twice and bagged one assist in his 20 appearances across Ligue 1 and the Europa League.

Geordie Boot Boys reported that Nuamah was on Newcastle’s radar in January. The 21-year-old is seen more of a work in progress rather than someone who would come in and make an immediate impact on Tyneside.

Lyon are in a dire financial situation which means they must sell players to prevent the club from being relegated to Ligue 2. Nuamah could be one of the sacrifices the French club have to make to stay in the top flight.

Maghnes Akliouche

Mitchell has a history with AS Monaco, he could use that to his advantage to sign young winger Maghnes Akliouche.

The 22-year-old was part of Thierry Henry’s Olympic squad that won a silver medal at Paris 2024. Aklioche featured in six matches during the games, scoring once.

For Monaco this season, Aklioche has 11 goal involvements this season, including three in the Champions League. One came against Barcelona in Monaco’s 2-1 win in the tournament’s opening game week.

Like Nuamah, Aklioche is on Newcastle’s radar. Toon fans will hope that Mitchell’s three years at Monaco could be a factor in charming Monaco executives to let him make the move to Tyneside in January.

With the transfer window closing in the next week, Mitchell has a lot of work to do in a short space of time to make a move happen.
