It’s hard to know exactly what Newcastle United will do in the January transfer window, but there are a few players they could look at who they know all about already.
Often, to make progress, it’s important for football clubs to move forward and identify new talent. But, that’s not always the case, and Newcastle United might be tempted to go backwards, as it were.
Who is the one player you were FURIOUS with Newcastle United for selling? Go back as far as you want!
Indeed, the Magpies have made a few sales in the past that they would probably regret. Due to PSR restrictions alone, we can name two players that should never have left the club.
Eddie Howe has made it clear what he wants in January. Whether the board listens or not is another matter, but Newcastle could do far worse than bringing these three players back to the club regardless.

Bring these three players back to Newcastle United
Elliot Anderson
Let’s not pretend this one is any kind of big secret. Ever since Elliot Anderson left Newcastle, he has proven exactly why they should never have sold him.
He’s now one of the best young midfielders in the Premier League, so it’s no wonder Man City want to pay £80m for Anderson now.
Whether Newcastle should have avoided selling Anderson or not is not really up for debate. However, the chances of reversing that mistake are looking slim.
Re-signing Anderson would be very costly for Newcastle, and doesn’t make much sense in that regard. Still, that doesn’t stop us wishing he could come back.
Yankuba Minteh
Another player to leave Newcastle last summer amid PSR pressure is Yankuba Minteh, who joined Premier League rivals Brighton for around £30m.
The tricky winger went on to register ten goal contributions last season (six goals, four assists) in the league, plus another two in the FA Cup. He even scored against the Magpies, just to make them regret selling him even more.
The goals haven’t been flowing as much this season, but Minteh still has one goal and four assists in 16 games this term. Suffice it to say, he’s doing far better than Anthony Elanga so far, and is the kind of explosive player Newcastle are really lacking.

Who is the one player you wish Newcastle United signed in the summer?
We missed out on a lot, but I'm not upset we didn't sign Strand Larsen in the end!
Ivan Toney
Newcastle United fans never really got a chance to see Ivan Toney in action for the Magpies. Having signed for the club way back in 2015 as a youngster, he spent most of his time out on loan.
After spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury, Scunthorpe, and Wigan Athletic, Toney found a permanent home at Peterborough in 2018. He joined the Posh for just £350,000 and joined Brentford two years later for in excess of £5m. The rest, as they say, is history.
Toney excelled in the Premier League for the Bees, has represented England, and is now playing out in Saudi Arabia. But, given the schedule of the league there, he could well go on loan in January and there are clubs in England that would be happy to give him a chance.
While it’s unlikely Newcastle would re-sign Toney at this point, he is a proven goalscorer who could provide short-term cover for Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa. If Will Osula is sold in January, we would not be surprised to see Toney rumours intensify.
