It has been a tough start to the season for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.
The 23-year-old has started all three of Newcastle United‘s Premier League games, but has looked nowhere near his best.
After proving to be one of the Magpies’ best players last year, Anthony Gordon is struggling to have the same kind of impact.
Eddie Howe has admitted that Gordon is not fit enough yet, having endured an unsettling summer. The attacker did not have a proper pre-season, having spent most of his time sat on the bench with England.
All the while, there has been speculation over his future amid a potential transfer to Liverpool.
Now the transfer window is closed, all Gordon can do is focus on his football. There is a lot of room for improvement from a player who was one of Eddie Howe‘s most reliable during the previous campaign.

Anthony Gordon is still having an impact despite slow start to the season
But while Gordon’s performances have not been amazing, a key stat proves that he is still one of the most impactful players in the Premier League after the first three games.
During his 247 minutes of action, Gordon has created eight chances for Newcastle United so far. Seven of those have been from direct play, rather than a set piece.
In chances created that do not include set pieces, only three players are performing better than Gordon. Dominik Szoboszlai has eight, while Cole Palmer and Morgan Gibbs-White are on nine.
Gordon has been nowhere near his best in Newcastle’s opening three games. However, these stats show that he has not been a passenger and is still proving to be a major influence.
There is so much more to come from Anthony Gordon this season
And that influence is only going to grow as he becomes fitter and sharper.
That is why these stats are so encouraging. Even when he is not at his best, Gordon is still one of the most productive forwards in the entire Premier League.
There is obviously so much more to come from the Toon winger, which is incredibly exciting. It was a frustrating summer for Gordon, having made just one appearance for England at the Euros. Even during that cameo, he was decisive and created opportunities. While it was infuriating, Howe believes Gordon will have learned a lot from his Euro 2024 experience.
However, he obviously needs to do even more to be an England regular, which should inspire him to even greater heights in a Newcastle United shirt.
It has been a slow start, but this has the makings of another special season on Tyneside for Anthony Gordon.
However, his current priority is England. Gordon is in Lee Carlsey’s squad right now, and will hope to feature in Nations League games against Republic of Ireland and Finland.
